The risk of dying from metabolic and bariatric surgery is higher than the risk of dying from obesity

As the body weight increases, lifetime decreases. Morbidly obese individuals are at a greater risk of dying from comorbidities of obesity such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Data covering approximately 60,000 bariatric patients from ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) Bariatric Centers of Excellence show that the risk of dying within the first 30 days after bariatric surgery is 0.13, i.e. approximately one out of every 1,000 patients is at the risk of death. This rate is considerably lower than most of other surgical procedures including cholecystotomy and hip replacement surgery. Therefore, despite the poor health status of bariatric patients before surgery, their chance of dying from surgery is extremely low. Scientific studies show that the risk of death from any cause is less for patients treated with bariatric surgery than for individuals who have not had bariatric surgery. Some data even show that the mortality risk due to certain diseases decreases by 89%, thanks to bariatric surgeries. For example, cancer mortality decreases by 60% for bariatric patients. It provides 90%reduction in death due to diabetes and 50% reduction in death due to heart disease. There are also many studies showing that life-threatening obesity-related diseases have been improved or completely eliminated after bariatric surgery. The benefits of bariatric surgery regarding mortality considerably outweigh its risks. As in all surgical operations, you should take the decision to have bariatric surgery by discussing with your surgeon, family members, and loved ones.

There is no death in the series of surgeries that I have performed. I have seen leakage (the most frightening probability) in only one case among my series consisting of 1,000 cases. I detected it during the surgical procedure that I converted to bypass surgery due to stenosis. The patient recovered from it without any problem. After all, the incidence of leakage that is 2% in the world and 8-10% in our country is only 0.1% in my personal series.
